Wiggins leads Team GB to team pursuit gold

Bradley Wiggins has led Britain to track cycling team pursuit gold in a thrilling Olympic final against Australia, becoming the country’s most decorated Olympian in the process.

Britain were trailing for most of the 4,000m race but stormed back to win in three minutes 50.265 seconds – a new world record mark of 3 minutes 50.265 seconds.

Victory meant Wiggins, 36, became Britain’s most decorated Olympian with eight medals – one more than fellow cyclist Chris Hoy who was commentating in the stands.

Denmark took the bronze medal.

Britain had earlier set a new track cycling world record as they romped into the final.

The team of Wiggins, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Owain Doull roared round the velodrome to set a semi-final time of three minutes 50.570 seconds, beating their previous mark of 3:51.659 set at the London Olympics in 2012.

Meanwhile, China roared into the track cycling women’s team sprint final with a world record today.

Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi clocked 31.98 seconds, beating the record China set four years ago in London, making them clear favourites for gold against Russia later in the velodrome.

Once in the final, the Chinese pair made no mistake and claimed the country’s first ever Olympic track cycling gold.
