Drama across Europe tonight – Europa League Roundup

Yet again the Europa League produced some surprising results tonight with some big European teams exiting the competition. Here are the final scores:

Coutinho

Manchester United vs Liverpool

Manchester United came into this game needing 2 goals to take the tie into extra time and 3 to secure a win. They got off to a dream start when Anthony Matrial was brought down by Nathaniel Clyne winning a penalty. The French teenager stepped up and slotted the penalty home filling the Old Trafford faithful with hope. However Liverpool placed the final nail in United’s coffin on the stroke of halftime. A piece of individual brilliance from Phillipe Coutinho saw the Brazilian chip David De Gea in the home goal making it 3-1 on aggregate. United failed to overcome this defect and are out of the competition.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund

Spurs hosted an inform Dortmund side that had all but sealed their place in the quarterfinals of the competition last week when they scored 3 unanswered goals. The Germans weren’t content with a 3-0 victory and a brace from star striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang added to Tottenham’s woes. Heung Min Son did score a consolation goal for the home side but they also exit the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Villarreal

Villarreal traveled to Germany with a two goal thanks to Edric Bakambu. The two sides however played out a boring 0-0 draw which was enough for the Spaniards to progress.

Valencia vs Athletic Bilbao

Gary Neville’s Valencia looked to have produced a fantastic comeback when they secured two goals at home squashing Bilbao’s one goal lead from the first leg. However Aritz Aduriz added to his tally in the competition as he pulled one back for the visitors. This late goal was enough for the Basque’s to go through on away goals. Goalscorers: Santi Mina, Aderlan Santos – Aritz Aduriz.

Lazio vs Sparta Prague

Lazio were the only Italian side left in European football heading into this tie and ultimately failed to progress to the next round. The home side were shocked by a strong Prague side which scored three goals to break Italian hearts.Goalscorers: Borek Dockal,Ladislav Krejci, Lukas Julis.

Braga vs Fenerbache

Braga displayed the power of home advantage tonight as they recovered from being a goal down from the first leg of the night to winning 4-1. The Portuguese side go through 4-2 on aggregate.Goalscorers: Ahmed Koka,Josue,Nikola Stojiljkovic,Rafa Silva – Alper Potuk.

Anderlecht vs Shakhtar Donetsk

The Belgian’s Anderlecht couldn’t stop Ukrainian superpower Shakhtar on home soil tonight as they lost 1-0. Donetsk progress 4-1 on aggregate and look strong heading deeper into the competition.Goalscorer: Eduardo

Sevilla vs Basel

Current holders Sevilla showed just why they have won this trophy back to back as they dispatched Basel 3-0 tonight. Basel had done well at home to keep the scores level but conceding three tonight was enough for the Spanish side to move into the last 8.  Goalscorers: Adil Rami, Kevin Gameiro(X2)
