FAI’s salary agreement with Denis O’Brien ends

Businessman Denis O’Brien has ended the arrangement whereby he contributed to the salaries of the Republic of Ireland senior football management.

O’Brien first began the arrangement with the FAI with the appointment of Italian Giovanni Trapattoni and his assistant Marco Tardelli in 2008 and continued it when Martin O’Neill took over the Ireland job in 2013. O’Brien also contributes towards the salary of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane.

FAI chief executive John Delaney confirmed the news on O’Brien’s Newstalk radio station.

“Over the last 10 years [O’Brien] has given funding of almost €10 million,” said Delaney.

“We always knew it was going to come to an end. At this particular juncture we are strong enough to stand on our own two feet.”

Martin O’Neill signed a new contract in January with the FAI and is believed to be paid €2 million a year.
