José Mourinho sacked by Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Jose Mourinho less than a week before their Carabao Cup final appearance.

The 58-year-old has paid the price for a disappointing campaign, with Spurs currently seventh in the Premier League and with little chance of making the top four.

The Premier League side were top of the table last November but their form has rapidly declined in the last six months.

They also suffered an embarrassing defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

A 2-2 draw with Everton last Friday proved to be Mourinho’s final game in charge, with the Portuguese denied the chance of delivering a first piece of silverware to the club in 13 years when Spurs take on Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday.

Mourinho’s coaching team has also departed.

A statement from Tottenham Hotspur read: “The club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said Mourinho showed “resilience” while at the club.

He stated: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.

Ryan Mason will take charge for the foreseeable stepping up from a position in the club’s academy.

“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.

“On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”

Ryan Mason will take charge of training today, with Spurs promising more news “in due course”.

Mason, a 29-year-old, joined Spurs after having to retire from football due to a serious head injury sustained during a match for Hull City four years ago.

He is currently head coach of their academy.

Mourinho was set to manage the side in the Carabao Cup final this Sunday but he will not get the chance to help the Londonders to their first trophy in 13 years.

It is the latest disappointment for Mourinho after he left Manchester United and his second spell with Chelsea in disappointing fashion.

The announcement comes hours after Tottenham were confirmed as a ‘founding club’ of the breakaway Super League.
