Mick McCarthy sacked by APOEL Nicosia

Mick McCarthy’s time as APOEL Nicosia manager is over, just hours after the debut of Republic of Ireland international Jack Byrne.

McCarthy had just nine games in charge of the team, but lost the last four games to leave the club in a relegation battle.

He has been sacked this morning.

A club statement confirmed the news and wished McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor well in the future.

Byrne’s move to Cyprus from Shamrock Rovers was confirmed last week as he linked up with the manager who gave him his international debut.

In a 14-team division, the most successful side in the history of the Cypriot top flight sit just two places and four points above the dropzone, albeit with a game in hand.

Byrne replaced Christos Wheeler with five minutes to go in a 2-1 away defeat to eighth-placed Doxa last night.

He could do little to alter the outcome in a game that the visitors took the lead in through a goal after eight minutes from Tomas De Vincenti.

Their next game is at home to Ermis Aradippou on Saturday.
