PSG and Benfica into the last 8 – Champions League Roundup

Zenit St.Petersburg and Chelsea were tonight knocked out of the Champions League by Benfica and PSG respectively. The Parisians first leg lead proved too much for the home side to overturn while Benfica secured their spot in the last eight as they braved the Russian cold.

Benfica travelled away to face Russian side Zenit St.Petersburg bringing a one goal lead with them. The Russian side fought tooth and nail and Hulk’s 69th minute goal was set to take the tie to extra time. However two late goals from the Portuguese side saved their Champions League hopes. Five minutes from time Nicolas Gaitan headed Benfica’s equaliser before Talisca scored the winner in the 96th minute. Benfica go through 3-1 on aggregate

Chelsea vs PSG

Chelsea’s involvement in this years Champions League came to an end tonight as they failed to overturn PSG’s one goal lead from the first leg. The home side went behind with 16 minutes played when Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s pass found youngster Adrien Rabbiot who scored a vital away goal for the Parisians. However Chelsea were given a lifeline when Diego Costa leveled the sides on the night with 27 minutes gone. Early into the second half Costa was forced off due to a knee injury which dented Chelsea’s comeback hopes. With 67 minutes played Ibrahimovic turned from provider to goal scorer. Thiago Motta had released Angle Di Maria down the left hand side who crossed the ball to the onrushing Swede who made it 2-1. PSG go through 4-2 on aggregate and look like contenders for this year’s competition.

PSG and Benfica join Real Madrid and Wolfsburg in the draw next Friday for the quaterfinals. The four other quaterfinalists will be confirmed following next weeks second legs.
