Shay Given’s Euro 2016 chances suffer another blow

Shay Given’s chances of forcing his way into Martin O’Neills 23 man squad for Euro 2016 have been dealt yet another blow after he suffered a groin injury in Stokes defeat today. Given has only just returned from a knee injury sustained in Ireland’s 1-0 win last October over Germany. The 40 year old made his first start since October on Monday night in a 4-0 defeat to title challengers Tottenham. He started in goal today at the Etihad Stadium and was beaten twice in the first half by Manchester City’s Fernando and was beaten from the penalty spot by Sergio Aguero. He strained his groin in the opening 45 minutes and he was replaced by Jakob Haugaard at halftime.

If Given’s groin injury turns out to be serious he may miss the Euro’s. However,if fit the Donegal man looks certain to be among the 23 man squad with Rob Elliot out injured for a number of months due to knee ligament damage sustained in a friendly against Slovakia in March. Darren Randolph and David Forde are also expected to compete for the starting position between the sticks this summer.
