Kellie Harrington has won an Olympic gold medal. She defeated favourite Beatriz Ferreira from Brazil in the lightweight final to become only the third Irish boxer to be crowned Olympic champion. Kellie Harrington is through to the Olympic lightweight final and will fight for the gold medal on Sunday. The 31-year-old Dubliner defeated Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in a tight and tactical semi-final at the Kokugikan Arena. She prevailed by the narrowest of margins on a split 3-2 decision.

Aidan Walsh guaranteed a medal with welterweight win

Aidan Walsh has secured Ireland’s first Olympic medal in boxing since the London Olympics in 2012. The Belfast welterweight comfortably outpointed Merven Clair from Mauritius in their quarter-final bout meaning he will win a minimum of bronze but a win over Pat McCormack from Britain in the semi-final on Sunday will give him a chance to upgrade to silver.

Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy win Gold for Ireland

Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan held off a late charge from Germany to win the gold medal for Ireland in the men’s lightweight double sculls. It is Ireland’s first gold medal in rowing and comes 24 hours after their women’s four team won bronze in Tokyo.
