Warren Gatland’s return was spoiled by Ireland as the world’s number one side humbled Wales in the opening Six Nations match in Cardiff. Ireland’s storming start saw tries from Caelan Doris, James Ryan and James Lowe – and 12 points from Johnny Sexton – establish a 27-3 half-time lead that Wales would never manage to surmount.

France claimed a dramatic last-gasp 32-30 victory to deny Wales the Guinness Six Nations Grand Slam after a controversial Paris epic. They could also destroy Wales’ title hopes by beating Scotland with a bonus point next Friday. France had lock Paul Willemse sent off 11 minutes from time for making contact with the eye area of Wales prop Wyn Jones, while the visitors played the last eight minutes with 13 men.
