Sepp Kuss won the sixth stage of the Vuelta a España with a solo ride to the summit finish atop the Pico del Buitre, having attacked from the day’s break. The Jumbo-Visma rider was part of a very strong 40-rider early break that gained more than six minutes as it headed towards the cat-one Pico del Buitre – the only major climb of the day. That had been whittled down considerably by three kilometres to go when Kuss attacked, quickly building a lead.

Mark Cavendish claims stage 21 sprint as Roglič wins Giro d’Italia

Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in his final Giro d’Italia stage as Primoz Roglic secured the overall title. Cavendish, who will retire at the end of the season, timed his kick superbly to pass his rivals and claim his 17th Giro stage win in Rome. Slovenia’s Roglic finished safely in the peloton to confirm his first Giro title, with Geraint Thomas second.

Italian champion Filippo Zana denied French veteran Thibaut Pinot a farewell victory in a nail-biting conclusion to Stage 18 in the Dolomites. Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic put in a timely reminder of his class by pushing pink jersey Geraint Thomas all the way to Val di Zoldo, the Slovenian rising to second place in the GC after the duo took 21 seconds from Joao Almeida.
