McGregor to fight Cerrone at UFC 246

Conor McGregor’s comeback has been confirmed after UFC president Dana White said the Dubliner would fight Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone on 18 January.

“Conor has signed and ‘Cowboy’ is ready to go,” said White.

The match-up at UFC 246 in Las Vegas will be the 31-year-olds third bout at welterweight, following the 2016 contests with Nate Diaz.

Former two-weight world champion McGregor (21-4) has not fought since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov over a year ago and announced his retirement in March this year before swiftly reconsidering.

In Cerrone, the Crumlin native will take on a 36-year-old American opponent (36-13) who has lost six of his last 10 contests.

Cowboy Cerrone is 36 years of age, 5 years older than McGregor.

Speaking last week, McGregor insisted he was “in prime physical condition” to fight.

“That will be the beginning of my season. I will then look to compete against the winner of Nate Diaz v Jorge Masvidal.

“Obviously, I have history with Nate Diaz, we are set to make the trilogy bout, so we will see how that goes.

“Then I will seek [a] Moscow bout and it will be against the winner of Tony Ferguson v Khabib Nurmagomedov …that is the bout we want. We want this bout in Moscow.”
