Francesco Totti pens one year contract extension with Roma

AS Roma confirmed yesterday that veteran captain and club legend Francesco Totti has signed a one year contract extension that will see the 39 year-old play one final season at the Stadio Olimpico.

The forward will turn 40 on 27th of September but will play on for a 25th season with the Serie A side, with whom he has set club records of 758 appearances and 304 goals.

He told the club’s website: “I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream. I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt – the Roma one. After speaking with the president, I am even more convinced that, working together, we can achieve great things.”

The new contract is for one year as a player followed by a six-year deal as the Giallorossi’s technical director, Totti revealed.

Roma president James Pallotta said: “It’s quite fitting that on the anniversary of the day AS Roma was founded (7 June, 1927), Francesco Totti has signed a new playing contract.

“No one has played more games or scored more goals for this football club than Francesco Totti and we’re delighted that he will continue for one more season. He’s earned this contract and now we want Francesco’s final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma.”

Spalletti and Totti began to see eye-to-eye as the season came to an end.

Totti had been linked with a move away from the Italian capital after a falling out with coach Luciano Spalletti but the two seemed to put their differences aside as Totti turned back time near the end of the season to help Roma finish third in the Italian top flight.
