Jordi Murphy out for up to 9 months

Ireland’s  Jordi Murphy has been ruled out for between six and nine months after suffering a serious knee injury during Saturday’s historic victory over the All Blacks in Chicago.

Murphy scored Ireland’s opening try in the 10th minute of the 40-29 win at Soldier Field but was forced out of the action 15 minutes later. The 25-year-old Leinster flanker was on crutches when he returned to Dublin this morning and it has now been revealed he has damaged the ACL in his left knee.

Murphy drops out of the squad to face Canada at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening, but Ireland have no other injury concerns ahead of the first match of the Guinness Series.

Coach Joe Schmidt has however added a further six players to the squad of 34 originally named for the Test against New Zealand.

Connacht backs Niyi Adeolokun and Tiernan O’Halloran, Munster forwards Dave Kilcoyne and Jack O’Donoghue and full-back Darren Sweetnam joined up with the squad at Carton House on Monday along with Leinster flanker and Dan Leavy. Ulster fly-half Paddy Jackson, who withdrew from the trip to America for personal reasons, has also returned to the squad.
