Slip ups in La Liga & title celebration hangover in France – European Football Roundup

Ahead of this week’s international break there were plenty of surprising results across Europe’s top leagues. Here’s a roundup of the action you may have missed.

La Liga

Villarreal

It was very much a weekend for the underdogs in the Spanish top flight this weekend with leaders Barcelona losing a two goal lead to Villarreal while second placed Atletico Madrid lost to 19th Sporting Gijon. Espanyol also produced a shock beating Athletic Bilbao while Real Madrid cruised to a 4-0 win over Sevilla. Serie A

Buffon

Juventus remain three points clear in their search for a fifth straight scudetto but the story of the weekend from Italy has to be the incredible achievement of Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian great has set a new Serie A record after not conceding for 974 minutes. He set this record in his sides 4-1 victory over rivals Torino. Buffon was humble as ever and his record looks set to stand for quite sometime.  On Saturday evening Roma hosted Inter in a crucial match for the race for third position. The 1-1 draw suits Roma who remain in third five points above level on points Fiorentina and Inter. Napoli are still hot on Juve’s heels after they beat Genoa 3-1. Hertha

The Bundesliga title race is all but over with Bayern Munich 5 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. However the league is quite interesting if you are a Hertha Berlin fan. The surprise package of the season Hertha sit in third and are four points clear of fourth placed Schalke. If they stay like this Hertha will be playing Champions League football next season which would be huge for such a relatively unknown club. Here are all the results from the German top flight this weekend:

  • FC Cologne 0-1 Bayern Munich
  • Hamburg SV 1-3 Hoffenheim
  • Hertha Berlin 2-1 Ingolstadt

  • Stuttgart 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen
  • Augsberg 1-3 Borussia Dortmund

Ligue 1

PSG monaco

Champions PSG lost for just the second time this season as Monaco spoiled the Parisians title celebrations. Goals from Vagner Love and Fabinho gave the visitors all three points which helps to cement their place in second as they are now five clear of Nice in third. Elsewhere in France Abou Diaby made his first appearance for Marseille after 18 months on the sideline due to injury. Lyon remain just one point behind Nice and this battle for the final Champions League spot looks set to go down to the wire. Here are all the results from Ligue 1 this weekend:

  • Marseille 2-5 Rennes
  • Saint-Etienne 3-0 Montpellier
  • Angers 5-1 Lorient

Plenty of surprises across Europe this weekend. With an international break clubs will be hoping their starts return uninjured.
