Frenchman Christophe Laporte ended the host nation’s long wait for a win with an opportunistic surge at the end of Stage 19 to ride to glory in Cahors. Tadej Pogacar put in an audacious attack inside the final 35km but it came to nothing – although the defending champion’s fifth place in the final sprint saw him shave off five seconds from rival Jonas Vingegaard’s lead.

A maiden stage win in the yellow jersey for Jonas Vingegaard all but secured the Dane a first Tour de France title after drama on the road to Hautacam. In an earlier show of sportsmanship, Vingegaard waited for rival Tadej Pogacar after the two-time champion crashed on the final descent ahead of the finale – before the two resumed hostilities on the last climb of the Tour.

Tadej Pogacar rode to a third stage win on the Tour de France after finishing off a superb team effort from his depleted UAE squad to beat rival Jonas Vingegaard at Peyragudes. Although Pogacar only took four bonus seconds back on the Danish race leader, the two-time champion said he was still “optimistic” about winning a third straight Tour.

The Israel-Premier Tech rider became the first Canadian stage winner since Steve Bauer in 1988 on a day race leader Jonas Vingegaard weathered the storm after a series of attacks from his yellow jersey rival Tadej Pogacar in the Pyrenean foothills.
