Ineos Grenadiers rider Geraint Thomas has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia after just three stages following a crash on Monday. Thomas was caught up in a crash during the neutral section after he cycled over a bidon. Scans have revealed he has suffered a pelvis fracture.

EF Pro cycling’s Jonathan Caicedo won Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia but that was only half the story as Geraint Thomas and Simon Yates suffered disappointing days. Italian time trial specialist Filippo Ganna won the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, finishing by far the quickest over a 15km ITT course in Sicily. Ganna’s Ineos teammate Geraint Thomas also enjoyed a strong day, taking time out of all of his expected general classification rivals.
