World No 1 Ashleigh Barty has announced her shock retirement from professional tennis at the age of 25. The Australian, who has won three Grand Slam titles and is the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, said she was retiring from the sport for a second time to “chase other dreams”.

Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal is out for four to six weeks with a cracked rib suffered during the Indian Wells final loss against Taylor Fritz on Sunday. Nadal was visibly struggling to breathe during the match having had to lie down at times to receive treatment.

Rafael Nadal secured a record 21st grand slam title with a 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-4 7-5 win over Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Australian Open. Nadal had to fight from two sets down as he moved clear of his great rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the most successful male player in the history of the majors.
