Champions League Last 16 draw

The UEFA Champions League Last 16 draw took place in Nyon, Switzerland today as the remaining teams learned of their next opposition.

The draw is as follows:

  • Juventus v Tottenham Hotspur
  • Basel v Manchester City
  • Porto v Liverpool
  • Sevilla v Manchester United
  • Real Madrid v PSG
  • Shakhtar Donetsk v AS Roma
  • Chelsea v FC Barcelona
  • Bayern Munich v Besiktas

Last year’s runners up Juventus will take on a Tottenham side that topped their group featuring Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.  Juventus finished runners up behind Barcelona in their group this year and will be a real test for Mauricio Pochettio’s men.

Manchester City will face a trip to Switzerland to face Basel who finished behind City’s rivals Manchester United to make it to the Last 16. City topped their group and will certainly fancy their chances to progress.

Liverpool will face Portuguese giants FC Porto. The Red comfortably won their group and will hope their attacking power will be able to break down the Porto defence that helped the side finish second in their group.

Manchester United face a tricky opponent in the form of La Liga side Sevilla. United topped their group but will be weary of Sevilla who finished in second behind Liverpool. This Sevilla side never give up as evidenced by their comeback against Liverpool to draw 3-3.

One of the if not the game of the draw will see defending champions Real Madrid face Paris Saint Germain. PSG will hope to avoid a repeat of last year when they let a four goal first leg lead slip against Madrid’s rivals Barcelona. This game is one you won’t want to miss.

AS Roma’s feat of topping a group containing Chelsea and Atletico Madrid will see them travel away to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk. The travel involved for both teams will surely be a deciding factor between these closely matched teams.

FC Barcelona will face Chelsea in a mouthwatering clash. The two sides have a long history of facing each other in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The last time the sides faced each other was in the 2012 semi-finals with Chelseas beating the Catalans on route to the title. Barca will have to be on their toes to beat this Chelsea side.

Besiktas became the first Turkish club to qualify as winners of a Champions League group and face a tough opponent in the form of German giants Bayern Munich. Besiktas will look to make life difficult for the Bundesliga outfit but are certainly the underdogs heading into this one.

The first legs will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday the 13/14 and the 20/21 of February with the second legs taking place on the 6/7 and 13/14 of March
