England’s Harry Kane and Spain’s Alexia Putellas have taken the top awards at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. Kane has become the first English winner of the Ballon d’Or in 25 years after an incredible 73-goal haul last season for club and country. Putellas won the treble and the Champions League with Barcelona in the 2025-26 campaign helping her to a third Ballon d’Or title.

Real Madrid ripped up the form book as Kylian Mbappe’s double secured victory over Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season. Mbappe put Jose Mourinho’s side ahead in the 41st minute but the home side replied in the second half through Raphinha. However Madrid resisted the subsequent onslaught as Mbappe struck again in the 87th minute to decide the match in Madrid’s favour.

Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday. The Bayern boss has been struggling with a virus that left him in pain and having difficulty walking on the touchline in last weekend’s victory over RB Leipzig. Kompany insisted he was on the mend after the draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Manchester United suffered one of the worst European nights in their history against Como to pile the pressure on beleaguered boss Michael Carrick. Eight days after conceding in the first minute to Atletico Madrid, United’s defences were breached after 118 seconds as brilliant Argentina playmaker Nico Paz scored the first of his double. It meant United became the first English team in history to concede in the first two minutes of consecutive major European matches, something no-one at Old Trafford wants to be associated with.

Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz struck late goals to help Paris St Germain punish Barcelona’s frailty in defence in a 4-2 Champions League victory at Parc des Princes. Vitinha produced a brilliant finish from just outside the area in the 81st minute, moments after Lamine Yamal’s equaliser, before Ruiz made sure of the result shortly before the final whistle to keep PSG at the top of the league phase on goal difference.
