UEFA abolish away goals rule for club competitions

The away goals rule will be scrapped from all UEFA club competitions from the start of the 2021-22 season, the governing body has confirmed. The rule has been part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965 and was applied to determine the winner of a two-legged knockout tie in cases where the two teams had scored the same number of goals on aggregate over the two matches.

Spain will face Croatia in the last 16 of Euro 2020 as they finished second in Group E thanks to a 5-0 thrashing of Slovakia in Sevilla. Two Slovakia own goals helped the Spaniards to victory with Aymeric Laporte, Pablo Sarabia and Ferran Torres all finding the net sending their opponents home.
