City cruise to victory while Atletico are held – Champions League Roundup
Manchester City braved the cold to face Dynamo Kyiv tonight while PSV hosted 2014 finalists Atletico Madrid in the Phillips Stadion.
Manuel Pellegrini made wholesale changes from the starting eleven who lost 5-1 in the FA Cup on Sunday to Chelsea. City’s opponents had not played since the 9th of December. The quality of Manchester City was evident from the beginning and Sergio Aguero gave his side the lead with 15 minutes played. Aguero was involved in City’s second goal. His hold up play and back heel found Raheem Sterling in space. The Englishman’s low cross was tapped home by an unmarked David Silva. The home side began to believe when Buyalsky pulled one back for Kyiv but Yaya Toure all but ended any comeback when his curling effort found the back of the net in injury time.
PSV vs Atletico Madrid
Dutch champions PSV held on to a home draw despite playing with ten men for over twenty minutes. Atletico Madrid were favourites heading into the tie but a resilient PSV would not bow to the Spanish outfit. Both sides had chances to take the lead but PSV’s Jeroen Zoet and Atletico’s Jan Oblak could not be beaten. Two yellow card offences for attacking midfielder Gaston Pereiro saw the Uruguayan head for an early shower in the 68th minute. All to play for in the second leg in three weeks time.
