Clare and Waterford inseperable after extra-time draw – Allinaz National Hurling leagues

Clare and Waterford will have to do it all again next Sunday after their 0-22 draw in Semple Stadium today in the National Hurling league final. Level at the end of normal time, and again at half time in extra time, it was appropriate that the gripping contest finished all square.

Both sides were extremely wasteful in normal time registering a total of 39 wides.They were deadlocked at 0-15 apiece when Clare’s leading marksman Conor McGrath, with 73 minutes on the clock, fired over the equalising score from the 20m line, tight on the left touchline.In the first minute of stoppage time, Waterford’s  Shane Bennett scored his seventh point of the game, and third from play, to hand the Déise a lead that looked like a winning one.In front of 19,498 spectators, it was a tight and tense affair with both sides putting over just four points from play between them – three of those for Clare. In the second half goal chances were created but none were scored. Clare led by three points, 0-11 to 0-8, but Waterford reeled them in with a trio of Bennett points, two from play.

Gleeson’s free then handed Waterford the lead for the first time in the game but the sides were level on three further occasions in a dramatic final ten minutes, plus stoppage time, before extra-time ensued. Waterford moved three clear in the first period before they were reeled in – 0-18 apiece at the midway point. They were level again four times before the full time whistle. Maurice Shanahan rescued Waterford with a dramatic equalising point from a free inside his own 65 to force the replay.
