Jason Smith wins gold in Rio

Jason Smyth has won a fifth paralympic gold medal after storming to victory in the 100m – T13 final in Rio.

The Derry athlete came home in a time of 10.64.

Unfortunately, Smyth will not be able to go for 100m and 200m double which he achieved in Beijing and London as there is no T13 200m in Rio.

Speaking afterwards Ireland’s first medalist in Rio said: “I was just glad that I was the first person to cross the line. It’s just incredible.

“This is my third Paralympic Games and my fifth gold medal. It’s a bit like a fairytale. I keep coming to these championships wondering when the fairytale is going to end.”

Reflecting on the fact that his winning time in the final was faster than his heat, Smyth added: “I knew the other guys were going to step up so I had to step up. I knew I was capable of a faster time. I have run quicker than these guys and I should be beaten them if I can put things together.”

“Thankfully I was the first man across the line.”
