Liverpool sign goalkeeper Loris Karius from Mainz

Liverpool have completed the £4.7m signing of Germany Under-21 goalkeeper Loris Karius from manager Jurgen Klopp’s former club Mainz.

The 22 year-old completed a medical today and will officially begin a five-year contract on 1 July.

He said that speaking to Liverpool manager and fellow German Klopp “convinced” him the move was the right decision.

Karius kept nine clean sheets in 34 league appearances this season as Mainz finished sixth in the Bundesliga.

“I spoke to the manager and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players,” he added.

Karius will wear the number 1 jersey next season and is eager to break into the starting eleven.

The former Manchester City youth team player will look to take the starting position from Belgium international Simon Mignolet, who has been the Reds’ first-choice keeper in recent seasons.

Mignolet, 28, signed a new five-year contract at Anfield in January but this latest signing will cast doubt over his future position at the club.
