Perhaps football’s first global superstar and considered by many to be one of the greatest to ever play the beautiful game, Pelé has sadly passed away aged 82 after a battle with colon cancer. The Brazilian won an incredible 3 World Cup titles and scored over 650 goals for club and county. His impact on the game is immeasurable. Enner Valencia steals the show as Ecuador condemn host nation Qatar to an opening game defeat. La Tri dominated the game from the off and Valencia had the ball in the back of the net inside the opening 3 minutes however this was chalked out for a marginal offside in the build-up. He wouldn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock, he was brought down in the area winning a penalty which he coolly dispatched after 16 minutes. His next goal was a cracker. A fine cross from the right wing found Valencia in the area who sent a bullet of a header past Saad Al Sheeb. Ecuador controlled the rest of the game and could have stretched their winning margin and in truth Qatar never really threatened them. Ecuador move to the top of Group A but know they face a tougher test when they take on the Netherlands on November 25th. Qatar will have to seriously up their game for their clash with Senegal on the same day. Max Verstappen has won the season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his 15th win of the season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second ahead of the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez the result sees Leclerc narrowly claim second in the World Championship by just three points. Elsewhere Sebastian Vettel brought the curtain down on his glittering career with a 10th place finish behind McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo who was competing in his last race for the foreseeable future. 2022 was very much a season to remember for Verstappen and Red Bull. The teams and drivers now look forward to the offseason before it starts again in earnest at the Bahrain Grand Prix at the start of March. George Russell is a Grand Prix winner for the first time after an eventful Brazilian GP. The Mercedes man lead from the start and controlled a race that saw two safety car deployments. His teammate Lewis Hamilton finished second despite early contact with Max Verstappen while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz rose from P7 to round out the podium ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc. Fernando Alonso had a great drive finishing P5 ahead of both Red Bulls after starting 17th. The result is Mercedes' first win of the season. The F1 circus heads straight to Abu Dhabi for the season finale next weekend. George Russell rises from P3 to win the Sprint race in Sao Paulo. The Mercedes man battled past Red Bull's Max Verstappen with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz also passing the Dutchman with some contact opening the door for Hamilton to get the final step on the podium. Sainz will take a 5 place grid penalty tomorrow meaning an all Mercedes front row. Pole sitter Kevin Magnussen kept his Haas in the points with a P8 finish. The Sao Paulo GP starts tomorrow at 6pm. Gerard Piqué - The Man in the Arena. New featured article on Mr. Barcelona is now live on Marking the Spot. Check it out, link in my bio! 🏁 Max Verstappen wins the Mexico City Grand Prix. The win sees the World Champion set a new record of 14 wins in a season surpassing the current record of 13 held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. The Dutchman lead from the start and was never really challenged by the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Home favourite Sergio Perez passed Russell to finish on the podium for the second season in a row in an otherwise uneventful race that saw Yuki Tsunoda retire after contact with Daniel Ricciardo while an engine issue ruined Fernando Alonso’s day. The teams and drivers have a week off with the Brazilian Grand Prix up next from November 11th to 13th. 🏁 Max Verstappen fights back to win the US Grand Prix as Red Bull clinch the Constructors’ Championship. Pole sitter Carlos Sainz saw his Ferrari taken out at turn one by George Russell. A safety car was brought out after Valtteri Bottas beached his car in the gravel and after the restart Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso had a huge crash with the Spaniard recovering to finish in the points. Hamilton rolled the dice with strategy and when Red Bull replied a slow pit stop put Verstappen on the back foot. The frustrated Dutchman hunted down his familiar foe to take victory in the closing laps. An emotional win for Red Bull as they celebrate the Constructors’ title a day after the death of team owner Dietrich Mateschitz. The teams head south of the border for the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend. ⚪️ Madrid see off Barcelona to win El Clásico. Real Madrid sit 3 points clear of Barca at the top of La Liga after a comprehensive 3-1 win this afternoon. Los Blancos were in control for most of the game and took and early lead through Karim Benzema. Federico Valverde extended this with a low driven strike after 35 minutes. Barca pushed and pushed but clear cut chances didn’t develop. A late break down the left saw Ansu Fati cut the ball back to Ferran Torres who made no mistake. However as the Catalans pushed for the leveller a counter attack saw Eric Garcia concede a penalty which was dispatched by Rodrygo to put the game to bed.
