🏁Sergio Perez wins the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix! The polesitter was briefly behind the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso after the start but the awesome power of his car saw him regain the lead from where he would ease to victory. The Mexican’s teammate Max Verstappen rose from 15th to finish second despite some concerns about his driveshaft late on. Alonso thought he had overcome a 5 second time penalty to finish on the podium for the 100th time in his career however the stewards found the rear jack had come into contact with his car before the 5 second penalty had been served at his pitstop. As a result the Spaniard was handed a 10 second penalty promoting Mercedes’ George Russell to third. Alonso takes P4 while Lewis Hamilton finished P5 ahead of the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc who lost out during a safety car and had a rather disappointing second half of the race. The teams and drivers now head down under for the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks from March 31st to April 2nd at Albert Park. GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONS! Ireland have completed a Grand Slam for the fourth time thanks to a 29-16 win over England at the Aviva Stadium. England started stronger but Ireland hit back with a Dan Sheehan try seeing them hit the front. The sending off of Freddie Steward just before the break was a hammer blow for the English but they did get back to 10-9. A Robbie Henshaw try relieved the pressure with Sheehan going over again before Rob Herring delivered the bonus point cherry on top as another group of Irish players wrote their names into the history books. Super Saturday got off to an entertaining start as Italy once again went toe to toe with a much fancied opponent. Blair Kinghorn proved the difference as he scored a hat-trick to give Scotland a 26-14 win. France knew they needed to win and hope for an upset in Dublin if they were to retain their crown and they did what was required of them seeing off Wales 41-28 at the Stade de France. The Grand Slam is on! Ireland showed great resolve to survive a Scottish onslaught in the first half before turning on the style in the second to record a 22-7 victory at Murrayfield. This week’s action kicked off in Rome yesterday as Italy looked to add to Wales’ woes this season however the Azzurri failed to live up to the rare favourites tag awarded to them pre-game leaving several tries after them allowing the Welsh to pick up a much needed 29-17 victory. England’s Six Nations revival came to a shuddering halt at Twickenham as France inflicted a record defeat on the Brits. Thomas Ramos went over early while Thibaud Flament, Charles Ollivon and Damian Penaud all scored braces in a 53-10 victory. And so it all comes down to Super Saturday the action begins at 12:30 as Scotland welcome Italy, France face Wales at 14:45 with Ireland hosting England at 17:00. You won’t want to miss it as Ireland go in search of a 4th Grand Slam. 🏁 Max Verstappen wins the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Dutchman picked up where he left off last season leading home a rather comfortable 1-2 for Red Bull. Sergio Perez was tested by the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc but heartbreakingly for the Monegasque he lost power forcing him out of the race. His teammate Carlos Sainz immediately came under pressure for the final podium place by Fernando Alonso in the now very competitive Aston Martin. The 41 year old Spaniard passed his countryman to take his 99th podium finish while Sainz held off the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton to finish P4. An intriguing season opener with plenty to digest from the top to the bottom of the grid. The teams and drivers have a week off before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix from March 17th to 19th in Jeddah. Ireland are now the only side with a 100% win record in this year's Six Nations Championship, Andy Farrell's men were pushed all the way by the ever improving Italians in Rome yesterday. Welsh rugby continues to flounder they did put up a much better fight this time out but they couldn't prevent England from reigniting their Six Nations hopes. Two early red cards made for a very entertaining match in Paris as France and Scotland payed out a ding dong battle. Scotland mounted a second half comeback to leave France on the ropes but Les Bleus hung on to claim victory. The squads have a week of rest before returning to action on Saturday March 11th and Sunday 12th. Italy host Wales in Rome with both sides eyeing this as their best opportunity for a win this season, England play host to France while Scotland will look to end Ireland's Grand Slam ambitions at Murrayfield. Round one of the Six Nations is done and dusted. Ireland’s first half blitz gave Wales a mountain they couldn’t climb, Duhan van der Merwe’s brace handed Scotland an historic win over England at Twickenham while defending champions France were pushed all the way by the ever improving Italy. Who do you think looks most likely to lift the title? Perhaps football’s first global superstar and considered by many to be one of the greatest to ever play the beautiful game, Pelé has sadly passed away aged 82 after a battle with colon cancer. The Brazilian won an incredible 3 World Cup titles and scored over 650 goals for club and county. His impact on the game is immeasurable. Enner Valencia steals the show as Ecuador condemn host nation Qatar to an opening game defeat. La Tri dominated the game from the off and Valencia had the ball in the back of the net inside the opening 3 minutes however this was chalked out for a marginal offside in the build-up. He wouldn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock, he was brought down in the area winning a penalty which he coolly dispatched after 16 minutes. His next goal was a cracker. A fine cross from the right wing found Valencia in the area who sent a bullet of a header past Saad Al Sheeb. Ecuador controlled the rest of the game and could have stretched their winning margin and in truth Qatar never really threatened them. Ecuador move to the top of Group A but know they face a tougher test when they take on the Netherlands on November 25th. Qatar will have to seriously up their game for their clash with Senegal on the same day. Max Verstappen has won the season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his 15th win of the season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second ahead of the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez the result sees Leclerc narrowly claim second in the World Championship by just three points. Elsewhere Sebastian Vettel brought the curtain down on his glittering career with a 10th place finish behind McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo who was competing in his last race for the foreseeable future. 2022 was very much a season to remember for Verstappen and Red Bull. The teams and drivers now look forward to the offseason before it starts again in earnest at the Bahrain Grand Prix at the start of March.
