Simona Halep announces retirement from tennis

Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one Simona Halep has retired from tennis. The Romanian announced her decision on court at the Transylvania Open following her 6-1 6-1 first-round loss to Lucia Bronzetti. The 33-year-old recently said she was considering retirement, external because of a knee injury that forced her to withdraw from Australian Open qualifying last month.

Simona Halep provisionally suspended following positive test

Former world No. 1 Simona Halep has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance. Halep said this was the “biggest shock” of her life. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said that “while provisionally suspended, the player is ineligible to compete in or attend any sanctioned tennis events organised by the governing bodies of the sport”.
