Tadej Pogačar withdraws from 2024 Olympics citing fatigue

Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar has pulled out of the Olympic Games because of “extreme fatigue”, the Slovenian Olympic Committee has said. Pogacar completed victory in this year’s Tour by taking Sunday’s final stage, which was a time trial, to win the illustrious 3,498km race for a third time. Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz will not be defending his Gold Medal after winning the King of the Mountains category at the Tour this year.

Kellie Harrington wins Gold in lightweight boxing

Kellie Harrington has won an Olympic gold medal. She defeated favourite Beatriz Ferreira from Brazil in the lightweight final to become only the third Irish boxer to be crowned Olympic champion. The five ringside judges all scored the fight in favour of the Irish woman who put in the performance of her life.

Kellie Harrington is through to the Olympic lightweight final and will fight for the gold medal on Sunday. The 31-year-old Dubliner defeated Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in a tight and tactical semi-final at the Kokugikan Arena. She prevailed by the narrowest of margins on a split 3-2 decision.

Ireland’s Kellie Harrington remained on track to repeat Katie Taylor’s Olympic gold medal win at the London 2012 Olympics by guaranteeing herself a bronze medal at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo and becoming only the second Irish woman to win an Olympic medal in boxing.
