Sir Alex Ferguson undergoes surgery for brain haemorrhage

Sir Alex Ferguson is in a serious condition in hospital after having emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

The procedure went “very well”, according to a statement from Manchester United, but he will remain in intensive care. The 76-year-old retired as United manager in 2013.

Ferguson’s son Darren, manager of Doncaster, had earlier missed his side’s final match of the League One season due to a “severe family issue”.

A United statement read: “Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.

“His family request privacy in this matter.”

Ferguson led United to 38 trophies during an unrivalled 26-year spell in charge, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

He was at Old Trafford last Sunday to see his former side’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, where he presented outgoing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a commemorative silver vase.
