Arsenal were stung by a late goal from Southampton’s Shea Charles as the Premier League leaders fell to defeat in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Chelsea have announced the biggest pre-tax loss in Premier League history. The £262m deficit for 2024-25 eclipses the £197.5m lost by Manchester City in 2011. It comes despite Chelsea bringing in £490.9m in revenue, which the club says is the second highest total in their history. In 2024-25 the Blues won the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup, and finished fourth in the Premier League.

The Republic of Ireland were unable to soothe the pain from Prague with victory as Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by North Macedonia in their friendly at Aviva Stadium. If the penalty shootout in Czechia last Thursday had gone the Boys in Green’s way, this would have been a play-off decider with a World Cup spot at stake. Instead Ireland and their visitors were left to battle it out in a fixture with nothing to play for.

Tottenham have appointed Roberto de Zerbi as their new head coach after the Italian signed a five-year contract with the club. The former Brighton boss has seven games to save the club from relegation to the Championship. If they do go down, he does not have a relegation clause that would allow him to walk away. De Zerbi has been the overwhelming first choice to become the club’s new permanent head coach since Thomas Frank’s departure.

A football club’s claim for compensation following the death of player Emiliano Sala in a plane crash has been rejected by a French court. The tribunal ordered Cardiff City to pay €480,000 to Nantes. The Welsh club had previously sought damages of more than £100 million (€115m) from the French side in a negligence claim, covering the Argentinian striker’s £15m (€17m) transfer fee and losses of potential earnings.
