Emotional Rory McIlroy wins Irish Open

Rory McIlroy secured his first win of the season, despite challenging weather conditions, by producing a sensational finale in the Irish Open, at the K Club.

McIlroy trailed Scotland’s Russell Knox by one shot with three holes to play but outstanding second shots at the 16th and 18th allowed him to birdie and eagle them respectively which saw him win by three shots.

He shot a 69 to end on 12 under to clinch his first success in six months.Knox shared second place with Welshman Bradley Dredge who fired a 66.

“I don’t get a chance to play in front of my home fans very often, so to play like that… I’ll never forget it,” an emotional McIlroy said afterwards.

McIlroy’s own charity the Rory Foundation hosted the event and the county Down native will donate all his winnings to the charity.
