Jaap Stam to take charge of Feyenoord
Former Manchester United defender and Reading boss Jaap Stam will take over at Feyenoord on June 1, the Eredivisie club have announced.
Stam, who won three Premier League titles as well as the 1999 Champions League with United, has signed a two-year deal which will see him leave PEC Zwolle in the summer.
Current Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst announced in January he intended to stand down at the end of the current campaign after almost four years in charge.
“I really enjoy PEC Zwolle, but, for every ambitious trainer, if the opportunity arises to work at a club like Feyenoord, you will seriously think about it,” Stam said, quoted on the Feyenoord website.
“After good and open conversations with (technical director) Martin van Geel about the possibilities and impossibilities at Feyenoord, I soon found out that I would like to go for this opportunity.
“I am grateful to PEC Zwolle for the fact that they understand my ambitions and quickly reached agreement with Feyenoord.”
Former Holland international Stam, 46, joined Lazio after leaving Old Trafford, and also had spells with AC Milan and Ajax before moving into coaching.
Stam was appointed Reading manager in June 2016 and took them to the Championship play-off final at Wembley, where they lost on penalties to Huddersfield.
The Dutchman, though, left the Berkshire club in March 2018 after his team slipped down the table and later took up an opportunity back in his homeland with Zwolle at the end of last year.
