Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho “not avaliable for selection” after failing a drug test

French website RMC Sport broke the news that Liverpool centre back Mamadou Sakho has been provisionally suspended by the club for failing a drugs test. It is being reported Sakho took a fat burner with out realizing its chemical composition which contained a banned substance.

According to the report the player took the substance unknowingly as part of a “purely personal and therapeutic interest.”This will come as a massive blow to his club as Sakho has hit form in recent months.It also raises questions about his position in the French squad ahead of this summer’s Euros.

UPDATE:

Liverpool have released the following statement:

“Yesterday, Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou Sakho.

The player will respond to UEFA on the matter.

The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches.

There will be no further comment at this time.”
