Xavi Simons had a second-half goal controversially ruled out as the Netherlands and France played out the first goalless draw of Euro 2024. The French started without Kylian Mbappe after he broke his nose in the win against Austria on Monday and they clearly missed their captain as they failed to take a number of chances. But it will be the Netherlands who will feel most aggrieved at not claiming the three points after Simons’ strike was chalked off.

Substitute Wout Weghorst swept in a late winner two minutes after coming on as former champions the Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign with victory against Poland at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out of Euro 2024 with the Netherlands due to injury. De Jong hasn’t played since being stretchered off in El Clasico in April but had linked up with the national team ahead of the European Championship. Yet it’s now been confirmed that De Jong won’t fly out to Germany with the squad for the tournament and will instead return to Barcelona for further treatment.
