World Tour cycling teams may refuse to race against Israel-Premier Tech following the multiple protests during the Vuelta a España that exploded into street violence in central Madrid on Sunday. Sources within rival teams have expressed their dismay to the Guardian at the refusal of the team to withdraw from the Vuelta and the lack of protection from the International Cycling Union (UCI) for its own commercial and sporting interests.

American rider Sepp Kuss is set to win this year’s Vuelta a Espana after Dutchman Wout Poels outsprinted Remco Evenepoel to win the penultimate stage. Poels and Evenepoel were part of an early breakaway group, which was reduced to five for a flat finish. And Poels, 35, denied 2022 champion Evenepoel a fourth stage win this year.

Alberto Dainese (DSM-Firmenich) has won the 19th stage of the Vuelta a España, sprinting to victory at the end of a hot 177.4km stage to Íscar in central Spain. Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers launched first after a determined lead-out by Geraint Thomas and the team, but tired up just before the line for a still creditable second place.

Remco Evenepoel powered to a resounding solo win from the breakaway on stage 18 of the Vuelta a España to take his third stage win of the race on the final summit finish at La Cruz de Linares. The Belgian dispensed with Max Poole (DSM) and Damiano Caruso on the first of two ascents of the Puerto de la Cruz de Linares climb and soloed to the finish to take his 50th career victory.
