Jermain Defoe has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39. Former West Ham and Tottenham striker Defoe had been playing for Sunderland, after returning to the club where he spent two-and-a-half seasons between 2015 and 2017, in January. His contract there was due to run until the end of the season.

Tributes have been paid to former Rangers and Everton manager Walter Smith who has died aged 73 following an illness. Smith led Rangers to 10 top-flight titles, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups as well as to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

UEFA have opened an investigation into alleged “discriminatory incidents” during Rangers ‘ Europa League visit to Sparta Prague. It’s believed the investigation centres on Glen Kamara being repeatedly booed by a crowd including 10,000 children throughout the game.
