Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar cemented his vice-like grip on the yellow jersey with a stunning Stage 17 win on the misty Col du Portet ahead of Jonas Vingegaard and Richard Carapaz. The young Dane and the Ecuadorian occupy the next two spots on the podium after Colombia’s Rigoberto Uran slipped back, but defending champion Pogacar’s GC lead is now over five and a half minutes.

David Gaudu (Groupama FDJ) won Stage 17 of La Vuelta a Espana as Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) clung on to his overall lead to go into the processional final stage as the race leader. Richard Carapaz (Ineos) and Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) both attacked on the final climb, but neither were able to take enough seconds off Roglic to deny the Jumbo-Visma rider.

Primoz Roglic took his fourth victory of La Vuelta winning the Stage 13 time trial on a challenging course that finished with the steep Mirador de Ezaro climb. The Slovenian took over the red jersey for a third time but both Richard Carapaz and the impressive Hugh Carthy stay in striking distance of the defending champion with five stages of the race remaining.

Hugh Carthy put in a performance for the ages to win Stage 12 of La Vuelta on the fearsome Alto de l’Angliru. Richard Carapaz took the red jersey back off Primoz Roglic but the Jumbo-Visma man combined with teammate Sepp Kuss to limit his losses to just 10 seconds going into the second rest day.
