Elena Rybakina has won her first Wimbledon title, coming from a set down to beat Ons Jabeur 3-6 6-2 6-2 in a dramatic final. Third seed Jabeur – the favourite to win the final – dominated the opening set, but Rybakina showed great composure to produce some flawless tennis to overcome Jabeur’s powerful hitting to win her first ever Grand Slam.

Rafael Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon due to abdominal injury
Rafael Nadal has had to withdraw from Wimbledon ahead of his semi-final clash with Nick Kyrgios due to the abdominal tear he suffered on Wednesday. The Spaniard practised this afternoon but was forced to hold a press conference this evening to announce his withdrawal.

Wimbledon bans Russian & Belarusian players from competing
Russian and Belarusian players will not be allowed to compete at Wimbledon this year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Men’s world number two Daniil Medvedev of Russia and women’s world number four Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus are the highest-ranked players to be affected.

World No 1 Ashleigh Barty has announced her shock retirement from professional tennis at the age of 25. The Australian, who has won three Grand Slam titles and is the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, said she was retiring from the sport for a second time to “chase other dreams”.
