Dortmund earn dramatic draw against Madrid – Champions League Roundup

The group stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League came to a close today as the final standings in Groups E,F,G and H were all decided. Here’s a full roundup of all the action:

Group E

Bayern Leverkusen 3-0 AS Monaco

Bayern Leverkusen ran out three nil winners at home to group winners AS Monaco tonight the hosts took the lead on the half hour mark through Vladlen Yurchenko. Three minutes after the restart Julian Brandt made it two nil. An 82nd minute penatly saw Wendell fail to convert but Monaco keeper Morgan De Sanctis turned the ball into his own net. The German side progress as group runners up.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 CSKA Moscow

Tottenham secured their place in the Europa League with a comfortable win over their Russian visitors tonight. CSKA took the lead in the 33rd minute through Alan Dzagoev.However Dele Alli levelled the sides in the five minutes later and Harry Kane put Spurs ahead on the stroke of half time. Thirteen minutes from time CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev topped off a horrible campaign by turning the ball into his own net.

Group F 

Legia Warsaw 1-0 Sporting Lisbon 

Legia made the most of home advantage tonight as they booked their spot in the Europa League. They needed a win to progress and Guilherme’s goal after 30 minutes was enough to see off their Portuguese visitors. Sporting exit Europe after a disappointing campaign.

Real Madrid 2-2 Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid were minutes away from topping Group F but a late Dortumund goal saw the Germans claim top spot. The hosts took the lead in the 28th minute when Karim Benzema found the net. He put Madrid two up in the 53rd minute but Dortmund didn’t lose heart. Pierre Emeric Aubameyang reduced the deficit in the 61st minute but the equaliser came in dramatic fashion. Madrid left back Marcelo got caught in possession in the 89th minute allowing Emre Mor to play Aubameyang up the wing. The striker beat Sergio Ramos before firing the ball across the face of goal where Marco Reus fired home.

Group G 

Clube Brugge 0-2 FC Copenhagen 

Mathias Joergansen heads home Copenhagen’s second.

FC Copehagen secured their spot in the Europa League with a two nil away victory over Club Brugge. The hosts went behind after 8 minutes when centre back Brandon Mechele directed the ball into his own net. The nights action was more or less over after 15 minutes when Matias Joerganesen headed home from a corner.

FC Porto 5-0 Leicester City

Andre Silva was on form tonight as he bagged a brace.

FC Porto flexed their attacking muscles against group winners Leicester tonight. Andre Silva put the Portuguese side ahead after six minutes. Twenty minutes later Jesus Corona made it two nil. Yacine Brahimi had the home side three up just before the break. Andre Silva scored his second of the night from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute and Diogo Jota completed the scoring 13 minutes from time. Porto go through as runners up.

Group H

Juventus 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb

Juventus secured top spot in Group H with a routine two nil victory. Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and Daniele Rugani put the result beyond their Croatain visitors in the 73rd minute. Dinamo Zagreb exit Europe at the group stage as many predicted before the competition began.

Lyon 0-0 Sevilla 

Lyon and Sevilla played out a scoreless draw in France tonight. The hosts will however enjoy Europa League football while Sevilla progress to the last 16 as runners up.
