Goals galore across Europe – Champions League Roundup
Leicester City got their Champions League adventure off to a wonderful start tonight in Belgium. There were plenty of goals across Europe so here’s a full roundup!
Group C
Manchester City 4-0 Borussia Moenchengladbach
Manchester City finally faced Borussia Moenchengladbach after their game was called off last night. The home side certainly didn’t disappoint and took the lead after 9 minutes through Sergio Aguero. Aguero bagged his second of the night from the penalty spot after 28th minutes. The Argentinian completed his hat trick in the 77th minute and Kelechi Iheanacho completed the scoring in added time.
Group E
Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 CSKA Moscow
German side Bayer Leverkusen got off to a fantastic start this evening when Mehmedi fired them ahead in the 9th minute. They were two clear of CSKA with 15 minutes gone thanks to Hakan Calhanoglu. However two goals in the space of two minutes earned the Russian champions a point. Alan Dzagoev and Roman Eremenko bagged the goals for CSKA tonight.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 AS Monaco
Tottenham Hotspur got their Champions League campaign off to a bad start tonight as they lost to Monaco. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for the French side after 16 minutes and Thomas Lemar put them two clear of the hosts just after the half hour mark. Spurs pulled one back on the stroke of halftime through Toby Alderweireld but the Londoners couldn’t find an equaliser.
Group F
Legia Warsaw 0-6 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund demolished their Polish hosts Legia Warsaw tonight. Mario Gotze began the scoring after just 7 minutes. Centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos made it two nil after 15 minutes. Marc Bartra added a third two minutes later. Raphael Guerreiro got in on the act after 51 minutes. It was 5-0 thanks to Gonzalo Castro who scored with 15 minutes to play. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang added a sixth with three minutes left to play.
Real Madrid 2-1 Sporting Lisbon
Defending champions Real Madrid were forced to produce a late comeback tonight as Sporting Lisbon took them down to the wire. Real were outplayed for large periods of time during the match and Lisbon deservedly took the lead in the 48th minute through Bruno Cesar. However the Portuguese side left the Bernabeau tonight with nothing to show for their efforts after Cristiano Ronaldo fired home a free kick in the 89th minute. Alvaro Morata scored the winner deep into injury time.
Group G
Club Brugge 0-3 Leicester City
Leicester City’s Champions League adventure got off to a dream start tonight. The traveling fans were celebrating after 5 minutes when Marc Albrighton put the Foxes ahead. Riyad Mahrez curled home a stunning free kick on the half hour mark to ensure they kept their lead heading into the break. Jamie Vardy won a penalty for Leicester with 60 minutes gone. Mahrez stepped up and slotted the ball home with ease.
FC Porto 1-1 FC Copenhagen
FC Porto were held by Denmark’s FC Copenhagen tonight. The home side went ahead thanks to Otavio and took the one goal advantage into the break. Andres Cornelius earned a point for the visitors when he slotted home on the 52nd minute. Copenhagen finished the game with 10 men after Jan Gregus was given his marching orders picking up two yellows.
Group H
Juventus 0-0 Sevilla
Italian champions Juventus played host to Europa League champions Sevilla tonight. The two powerhouses of European football couldn’t be separated in Turin this evening although Gonzalo Higuain rattled the crossbar during the second half for Juve.
Lyon 3-0 Dinamo Zagreb
Lyon showed no mercy to the visiting Dinamo Zagreb tonight. Coretin Tolisso put the French side ahead after 13 minutes. Just four minutes after half time it was 2-0 thanks to Jordan Ferri. A well worked goal came in the 57th minute with youngster Maxwel Cornet completing the move.
