Jonathan Walters a doubt for Euro 2016

Irish striker Jonathan Walters could be in danger of missing Euro 2016 if it is confirmed he needs knee surgery. The Irish Daily Mail reported today that Walters is expected to need an operation on a knee cartilage problem. The Stoke City man will be out for six to eight weeks following this surgery on an injury that saw him miss the recent friendlies over Switzerland and Slovakia.

That would rule him out of the rest of Stoke’s Premier League campaign and, most likely, Ireland’s warm-up clash with The Netherlands on 27 May, leaving only the final warm-up game against Belarus on 31 May to prove his fitness.

The Republic of Ireland’s opening game at the tournament is on the 13th of June against Sweden. Walters was an influential player in the nations qualification for the tournament. He scored two goals in the play-off against Bosnia & Herzegovina. He was recently named Senior International Player of the Year at the recent FAI awards ceremony.

The race is certainly on for Walters who would be a massive loss to the Republic of Ireland’s hopes.
