Leicester lead the way – Champions League Roundup

Match day three of this seasons UEFA Champions League got underway today with all the teams in Groups E,F,G and H in action. Here’s a full roundup of tonight’s action.

Group E

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Bayer Levekusen held Tottenham to a scoreless draw in Germany tonight. Both sides had chances to take all three points. Spurs can thank goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for keeping them in the game with a number of outstanding saves.

CSKA Moscow 1-1 AS Monaco

AS Monaco left it late to earn a draw away to Russian outfit CSKA Moscow. Ironically Moscow took the lead in the 34th minute through Monaco loanee Lacina Traore. The home side must have thought they had the three points secured but a 87th minute goal from Bernanado Silva saw the sides share the spoils.

Group F

Real Madrid 5-1 Legia Warsaw

Despite an early scare Real Madrid hammered their Polish visitors at the Bernabeau tonight. Legia almost took the lead but the upright denied their close effort. Minutes later Gareth Bale opened the scoring and four minutes later Marcelo’s shot was deflected into the Legia net by Tomasz Joflowiec. However two minutes later Legia won a penalty and Miroslav Radovic beat Kaylor Navas from the spot.Madrid stuck back through Marcos Asenjo who made it 3-1 in the 37th minute. Lucas Vazquez’s 68th minute strike made it 4-0 and Alvaro Morata rounded off the scoring five minutes from time.

Sporting Lisbon 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund were in flying form tonight as they downed their hosts this evening. The German side took the lead through a fantastic goal from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in the 9th minute. Two minutes from the interval Julian Weigl had Dortmund two up. The second half saw Bruno Cesar pull one back for Lisbon in the 67th minute but the home side couldn’t find an equaliser.

Group G 

Club Brugge 1-2 FC Porto

Belgian side Brugge were on cloud nine for the first half of this tie but the second half was a real let down for the home fans. Brugge took the lead through Jelle Vossen in the 12th minute. His fine strike was Brugge’s first goal in the competition this season. The second half saw Porto display their quality with Miguel Layun bringing the sides level in the 67th minute. A 93rd minute penalty from Andre Silva saw the Portuguese side take all three points from tonight’s tie.

Leicester City 1-0 FC Copenhagen

Leicester City’s Champions League adventure seems to get better and better. Three games played, three games won.  This game was far from pretty but Riyad Mahrez’s goal five minutes from the break was enough for the Premier League champions to secure the three points.

Group H

Dinamo Zargreb 0-1 Sevilla

 

Spanish side Sevilla always looked the better side in this clash. Zargreb are struggling with European football but will take some consolation in the fact they only conceded one tonight. The winner came from Sami Nasri in the 37th minute.

Lyon 0-1 Juventus

A ten man Juventus side did enough to defeat Ligue 1 side Lyon tonight. Lyon should have taken the lead in the 35th minute when they won a penalty. Star striker Alexandre Lacazette took the spot kick but veteran Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon saved his effort. Mario Lemina received his second yellow card in the 54th minute and headed for an early shower. Buffon was forced to pull off another amazing save to deny the home side.Despite being a man down away from home Juan Cuadrado found the Lyon net in the 76th minute. A great result for the Serie A giants.
