Ronaldo and Real punish 10 man Bayern – Champions League

Quarter-final

Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as holders Real Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Bayern’s Arturo Vidal opened the scoring and missed a penalty but Ronaldo volleyed home the equaliser in the 47th minute and scored the winner 13 minutes from time when he was picked out by Marco Asenio and finished calmly.

Vidal struck in the 25th minute when he evaded Nacho and met Thiago Alcantara’s corner with a thumping header to cap off a spell of Bayern dominance, but he blazed a penalty over the bar in first-half stoppage time following Dani Carvajal’s handball.

Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer denied Ronaldo and Gareth Bale with fine stops but after Javi Martinez was sent off in the 61st minute following two quick-fire yellow cards, Real took control, leaving Bayern with much to do ahead of the second leg in Spain next Tuesday.

Arturo Vidal’s penalty heads towards the stands.

Bayern were without Polish striker Robert Lewandowsi because of a shoulder injury, so Thomas Muller lead the attack.

Real, unbeaten so far in the Champions League this season, had to do without defenders Raphael Varane and Pepe, who suffered a double rib fracture in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with city rivals Atletico. Fernandez Nacho came into the backline.

After a tense opening it was the visitors who went close in the 18th minute.

Toni Kroos sent in a deep cross from the right and Karim Benzema headed the ball down, which bounced back up over the dive of Neuer, who somehow managed to get his fingertips on it as it went on to the crossbar.

It was Bayern, though, who took the lead on 25 minutes.

Thiago played in an outswinging corner from the right, which Vidal powered past Keylor Navas, the goalkeeper only able to push the ball into the roof of the net.

Bayern remained on the offensive, with Franck Ribery’s shot deflected behind and Vidal sending a header just wide before at the other end Kroos flashed a low drive past the post following a corner as Real looked to get back into the tie.

In first-half stoppage time, Bayern had a chance to extend their lead after Carvajal was adjudged to have blocked Ribery’s shot with his arm.

However, Vidal stepped up and blasted the penalty high over the crossbar.

It would prove to be a costly miss as Real were on level terms early in the second half.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after scoring his second goal.

Carvajal whipped a ball across the Bayern penalty area from the right, which Ronaldo clipped past Neuer into the far corner.

Now it was Real who took hold of possession, with Bayern struggling to mount any sort of sustained pressure.

In the 56th minute, Carvajal got away down the right and sent a ball into the six-yard box, which Gareth Bale met with a bullet header, but Neuer made a superb reaction save to push the ball over the bar.

The Wales forward soon went off, replaced by Marco Asensio, with some suggestions it could be precautionary against an injury concern.

Bayern were reduced to 10 men just after the hour when Martinez, who had only just been cautioned, tripped Ronaldo as the Portugal forward looked to get clear.

Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli was left with little option but to shown the defensive midfielder a second yellow card followed by a red.

Real looked to make their extra man count, with Sergio Ramos whipping a 25-yard free-kick just wide following a handball by Ribery.

Neuer kept Bayern in the game with two fantastic saves in as many minutes when he first kicked away Benzema’s close-range effort and then got a strong hand to beat off Ronaldo’s point-blank effort.

The German, though, could do little to prevent Real taking the lead on 77 minutes when Ronaldo stabbed in a low cross from Asensio.

Real could have further extended their advantage late on as Marcelo’s shot from the left flew wide and Benzema’s angled effort and a header from Ramos were both correctly ruled out for offside.

Red Bull complete a record breaking streak of 12 race wins in a row as Max Verstappen wins the Hungarian Grand Prix. Polesitter Lewis Hamilton had a poor start in his Mercedes as Verstappen passed him into turn one while the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris also capitalised to get ahead on the opening lap. Sergio Perez was rewarded for his patience as he arrested his slump in form to charge forward to pass Piastri and Hamilton to claim third. The Mexican set his sights on Norris but was unable to catch the Englishman who hung on to claim back to back second placed finishes. Charles Leclerc finished P6 but incurred a 5 second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane which promoted George Russell who had risen from P18 to finish seventh on the road ahead of Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz. The Aston Martin pair of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10. The teams and drivers head straight to the Ardennes forest for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa next weekend. Max Verstappen makes it six wins in a row recovering from a poor start to come out on top at the British Grand Prix. McLaren's Lando Norris took an early lead after a superb start with his teammate Oscar Piastri also causing problems for Verstappen. However the dominant Red Bull didn't have to wait long to regain the lead and after that it never really looked to be in doubt. A safety car proved crucial for Lewis Hamilton who leapfrogged Piastri to finish third. George Russell came home fifth ahead of Sergio Perez who rose from P15 while Fernando Alonso held off the rapid Williams of Alex Albon for seventh. Once again poor strategy calls from Ferrari proved disastrous as Leclerc and Sainz came home P9 and P10 respectively. The teams and drivers now have a week off before heading to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix from July 21-23rd. Victory on home soil for Red Bull as Max Verstappen deals with the challenge of Ferrari with relative ease. His teammate Sergio Perez rose from P15 to come home third producing some fine overtakes in the process. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc temporarily lead the race but ultimately his Prancing Horse was no match the Raging Bull of Verstappen. Leclerc can thank his teammate Carlos Sainz for engaging Perez in a late enthralling battle for P3 which left the Mexican with too much work to catch Leclerc for second place. Lando Norris came home an impressive P5 in an updated McLaren ahead of the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso. It should be noted track limits were a recurring theme this afternoon with several drivers picking up 5 second time penalties. The teams and drivers head straight to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix next weekend. Yet another victory for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who equals the great Ayrton Senna with 41 Grand Prix victories. In truth it was all rather easy for the Dutchman who safely negotiated a virtual safety car and a full safety car restart. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso had a bad start but regained the second step on the podium by passing Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz recovered well to finish P4 and P5. The result today also saw Red Bull clinch their 100th Grand Prix victory with legendary designer Adrian Newey collecting the Constructors’ trophy on the podium. The teams and drivers head back across the Atlantic for the Austrian Grand Prix on July 2nd which just so happens to be Red Bull’s home race. Verstappen saunters to victory in Spain. Max Verstappen continued Red Bull’s formidable start to the season as he coasted to victory in Barcelona. Despite a decent start home favourite Carlos Sainz was unable to keep his Ferrari on the podium with the Mercedes’ duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell extracting the most out of their updated cars to complete the top three. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez rose through the ranks after an early qualifying exit to finish P5 while McLaren’s Lando Norris who started third saw his chances scuppered after contact with Hamilton on the opening lap coming home P17. After back to back race weekends the teams and drivers now have a short break before returning to action for the Canadian Grand Prix from June 16-18th. Max Verstappen wins in Monaco! What had looked like yet another pedestrian race around the principality sparked to life when rain fell with over 20 laps to go. There were plenty of close calls but ultimately the top three remained unchanged with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso coming home second while Alpine's Esteban Ocon picks up a third place finish providing a much needed boost for the French team. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished P4 and P5 as Ferrari endured another frustrating day with home favourite Charles Leclerc P6. The teams now hotfoot it from Monaco to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend. Max Verstappen produced a superb drive to rise from ninth to win the Miami Grand Prix. The Red Bull man made his way through the pack in the early stages before masterfully maintaining his tyres allowing a late pit stop for mediums. His teammate and pole-sitter Sergio Perez regained the lead temporarily but he stood no chance against Verstappen due to the tyre differential. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso came home third while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz dropped from P3 to finish P5 behind the Mercedes of George Russell. The F1 circus now heads to Imola for the Emilia-Romagna GP from May 19-21st. Sergio Perez wins the Azerbaijan Grand Prix! Ferrari's Chales Leclerc lead from pole but it wasn't long before the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Perez passed him. Verstappen was caught out when he pitted only for a safety car to follow the next lap allowing Perez to leapfrog him. The Mexican had a rather uneventful race after that while Leclerc held off Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso to pick up Ferrari's first podium of the season. The teams and drivers now head across the Atlantic for the Miami Grand Prix next weekend. Sergio Perez wins the Sprint race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix making the most of DRS to get past polesitter Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari man had kept his lead off the line but after the safety car was deployed to remove debris from the track following a brush with the wall for AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda the Monegasque was powerless to hold off Perez. His teammate Max Verstappen finished third despite heavy sidepod damage after opening lap contact with Mercedes’ George Russell. They do it all again tomorrow and Red Bull will hope for a repeat with Leclerc starting first ahead of Verstappen and Perez.
