Sevilla and Liverpool into the final – Europa League Roundup
Liverpool sank the yellow submarine’s European dream tonight as they comprehensively defeated Villarreal while defending champions Sevilla dispatched Shakhtar Donetsk in the night’s other semi-final
Liverpool 3-0 Villarreal (3-1 agg)
Villarreal scored a late goal last week to take a one goal lead into the second leg. The yellow submarine sprung a leak with just seven minutes played when a Bruno Soriano own goal brought Liverpool back into the game. A fine second half display from Liverpool sealed their spot in the final. Daniel Sturridge fired the Reds ahead on 63 minutes. The visitors hopes of a comeback were all but ended when Victor Ruiz was sent off for his second yellow card offence with a little under 20 minutes to play. Adam Lallana’s 81st minute goal completed a fantastic night for Liverpool fans who will head to Basel full of confidence.
Sevilla 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk (5-3 agg)
Defending champions Sevilla showed why they love this competition tonight as they produced a fine performance to book their spot in the final for the third straight season. The Spaniards had two vital away goals coming into the second leg and increased their adavantage when Gamero scored inside 10 minutes. Former Arsenal player Eduardo pegged one back for Shakhtar before half-time. Two minutes after the restart Gamero has his second of the game and right-back Mariano completed the scoring with half an hour to play. Sevilla have won this completion two years in a row and look determined to make it three from three.
Liverpool and Sevilla will face off on Wednesday the 18th of May in Basel where this year’s Europa League winner will be crowned.
