Tadej Pogacar and Geraint Thomas avoided any drama on the much-hyped sterrato of Tuscany in a GC stalemate on Stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia. Instead, the day was about the three-man breakaway of Pelayo Sanchez, Julian Alaphilippe and Luke Plapp, who held off the bunch before the Spanish debutant proved the strongest to take victory.

Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia was tailor made for the sprinters yet Frenchman Benjamin Thomas won from a heroic quartet of escapees as the fastmen were let down by their team-mates. Tadej Pogacar retained the pink jersey but all eyes were on Thomas and Cofidis after their first win in 2024 from the breakaway.
