Luke Donald has been named Europe’s Ryder Cup captain for next year’s contest in Rome after Henrik Stenson was stripped of the role. Stenson’s move to LIV Golf forced Team Europe to look for a new captain and former world number 1 Donald has the credentials having previously served as a vice-captain.

Henrik Stenson has confirmed he is joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf International Series and says he is “disappointed” to be stripped of the Ryder Cup captaincy but hopes to represent Team Europe in the future. The decision to remove the Swede was made after weeks of speculation he would join the breakaway tour.
