A fiendish stage through the mountains of the Massif Central at the Tour de France bore witness to yet another mano-a-mano classic between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. After Pogacar had distanced the Dane – and everyone else – with a rasping attack on the Puy Mary, Vingegaard dug deep into his well of reserves to claw his way back on terms, before beating the Slovenian on the line.

A hotly-contested sprint saw Jasper Philipsen charge to victory on Stage 10 of the Tour de France. It’s been a difficult, winless Tour to date for the Belgian, but he found his best to down the in-form Biniam Girmay, while Mark Cavendish finished down the field. Jordi Meeus caused a monumental upset on Stage 21 of the Tour de France as he outsprinted Jasper Philipsen, Dylan Groenewegen and Mads Pedersen to win on the Champs-Elysees. The Belgian had not finished higher than sixth in the opening 20 stages, making Bora’s decision to pick him over Sam Bennett look questionable, but he came good at the last with a stunning sprint.

Jonas Vingegaard all but secured a second Tour de France triumph as rival Tadej Pogacar ended his race on a high with victory in Stage 20 in the Vosges. Pogacar outkicked Felix Gall, Vingegaard and the Yates brothers in a five-up sprint after local legend Thibaut Pinot came close to the perfect Tour swansong. Italy’s Giulio Ciccone secured the polka dot jersey.
