Dutchman Koen Bouwman doubled up on the Giro d’Italia and secured the blue jersey despite a calamitous finish to Stage 19 that saw Attila Valter and Andrea Vendrame go into the barriers. Nothing separated race leader Richard Carapaz and his pink jersey rivals Jai Hindley and Mikel Landa on a day of GC attrition ahead of Saturday’s decisive day in the Dolomites.

Dutchman Koen Bouwman won a fascinating four-way battle at the conclusion of a pulsating Stage 7 at Potenza to secure Jumbo-Visma’s first win on the Giro d’Italia for three years. Expertly supported by teammate Tom Dumoulin in the day’s break, Bouwman also secured the blue king of the mountains jersey after denying Bauke Mollema and Davide Formolo for a maiden Grand Tour stage win.
