Stage 8 will be remembered as Mark Cavendish’s final outing at the Tour de France. The Manx Missile, who was chasing a record 35th stage win in cycling’s biggest race, departed in an ambulance after crashing with 61km remaining. Mads Pedersen won the day, denying Jasper Philipsen a fourth stage win at the 2023 Tour in a chaotic sprint as Wout van Aert was left wondering what might have been.

Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in his final Giro d’Italia stage as Primoz Roglic secured the overall title. Cavendish, who will retire at the end of the season, timed his kick superbly to pass his rivals and claim his 17th Giro stage win in Rome. Slovenia’s Roglic finished safely in the peloton to confirm his first Giro title, with Geraint Thomas second.

The 2023 Giro d’Italia will be decided by an uphill 18.6km individual time trial on Saturday, with Geraint Thomas holding a 26-second advantage over Primoz Roglic. Thomas looked the strongest out of the GC big-hitters in Stage 19 but saw Roglic claw back three seconds with a lightning surge atop Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
