Denmark’s Mads Pedersen celebrated his new contract with Lidl-Trek with his third – and arguably most impressive – win of the Giro d’Italia. Pedersen battled back after being dropped on the tough climb into Matera before holding off Italy’s Edoardo Zambanini and Britain’s Tom Pidcock in a nail-biting sprint to the finish line.

Casper van Uden delivered a shock sprint victory on Stage 4 at the Giro d’Italia to lift Picnic PostNL out of the relegation zone in the UCI World Rankings. It was Van Uden’s first sprint in a three-week race and he stepped up magnificently to see off Olav Kooij in the finale. Just like the opening stage, Lidl-Trek protected their leader throughout before a long and successful leadout. Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in his final Giro d’Italia stage as Primoz Roglic secured the overall title. Cavendish, who will retire at the end of the season, timed his kick superbly to pass his rivals and claim his 17th Giro stage win in Rome. Slovenia’s Roglic finished safely in the peloton to confirm his first Giro title, with Geraint Thomas second.
